Dr. Herschaft received a BA degree from Queens College - City University of New York, a DDS from West Virginia University (WVU) School of Dentistry, a certificate in oral and maxillofacial pathology from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), and an MA in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of New Orleans. He is Professor Emeritus - MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine and has served as a tenured Professor of Biomedical Sciences, University of Nevada - Las Vegas, School of Dental Medicine until 2019. He has also served as a Guest Professor - Nankai University Medical School in Tianjin, China. Currently, he is Professor of General Dentistry – Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) - El Paso, Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine. He has consulted with the Clark County, Nevada Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner, Nevada State Disaster Identification Team, University of South Carolina, School of Law - Children’s Law Center, South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Providing over 45 years of forensic dental expertise to these and other legal agencies in Louisiana, North Carolina, Georgia, and the United Stated military; he has been vice-president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) and American Board of Forensic Odontology. Additionally, he has served as president of the American Society of Forensic Odontology. Currently licensed to practice dentistry in Texas, South Carolina, and New York; Dr. Herschaft focuses his efforts toward the preventive dental treatment of underserved children, recognition of the oral manifestations of human abuse, and the diagnosis and treatment of oral disease in medically compromised individuals. Dr. Herschaft was designated a Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the WVU School of Dentistry Alumni Association in 1998 and has been recognized by several national organizations and state agencies for his forensic dental services. A Diplomate of the American Boards of Oral Medicine and Forensic Odontology, Fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists, AAFS, Pierre Fauchard Academy, and Member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society; he has published and presented extensively in the United States and abroad regarding the subjects of oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral medicine, the opioid epidemic, pharmacology in dental practice, the history of the dental profession, and forensic odontology.
